National Housing Demonstration
Workers in Britain are facing a housing emergency. Average UK rent is rising faster than wages and inflation, and UK renters already spend more of their income on rent than almost anywhere else in Europe. When organised workers win increases in pay, these are being absorbed by landlords through ever greater rents. Despite the 1mn people on waiting lists, building of new council homes has stalled, all while the far right make hay, blaming working class migrants instead of government, developers and landlords.
Rent controls are urgently needed to shift the balance of power towards renters while we continue to campaign for what we really want - massive investment in council housing built on public land, run democratically and free from profit. We recognise that the housing crisis is a workers’ issue, and are supporting the National Housing Demo on 18th April at 1pm in Soho Square Gardens, London.
